Selectmen Set Town Caucus Date: Tuesday, January 8, 2013
By Kim Siebert MacPhail and Meredith McCulloch
At Town Caucus each January, registered voters gather to nominate candidates for Town offices. This year’s Caucus date has been set for the evening of Tuesday, January 8 at 7:00 pm in the Multipurpose Room at Town Hall.
The Town Caucus is one of two methods by which those who desire to run for elected town office may be nominated and placed on the March town ballot.Traditionally, a Selectman who is not up for reelection presides. Candidates are nominated and those present vote by show of hands to choose the Caucus nominees. Up to two candidates for each open seat may be nominated. Each candidate has an opportunity to speak, and the person placing the name in nomination may make a statement. No prior notice is necessary to participate in the Town Caucus nomination process.
If more than two candidates are nominated for an open position, the two who receive the highest number of votes will appear as Caucus Nominees on the March town ballot. Candidates who are not nominated at the Caucus may still run. To do so, they must collect the signatures of at least 50 Bedford voters on nomination papers obtained from the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall. Candidates nominated by petition must file their completed papers with verifiable signatures to the Town Clerk by January 20, 2013.
Wednesday, January 9 is reserved in case a storm requires postponement of the January 8 meeting.
