Routes 4/225/62 One of Five “Most Congested” Roadways in State

At the Planning Board meeting on Wednesday night, Board member Sandra Hackman reported that the Boston Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has identified Routes 4/225/62—otherwise known as Bedford’s Great Road—as one of the state’s five most congested roadways.
“There are different categories of roads—interstate, major arterial, collector and so on—but [for a road in its] category, it’s among the five worst. This is significant,” Hackman said.
While it’s not clear whether any action will be taken, Hackman expressed the hope that the MPO’s assessment will cause a greater sense of urgency at the state agency level to do something that alleviates traffic congestion in Bedford.
In addition, Hackman reported another matter of concern, saying that the MPO has noted the lack of good bike access between the Minuteman Bikeway and the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail, as well as a general lack of bike access to the Fitchburg commuter rail line that passes through Concord and West Concord on its way to Boston.
