The events of Patriots Day Monday and the ensuing days have been grim reminders of the danger that can arise unexpectedly and in places we all normally assume to be safe. While in general we do live in a world safer than that of our ancestors, we need to keep in mind that life is fragile. Accidents can happen. People can do bad things that have horrific repercussions for the innocent. Many of us will be left as witnesses and reactors. How do we cope?
Well, many experts say to turn off the television news and rely on newspapers and the radio instead. This avoids being retraumatized and provides a bit of emotional protection.
