On May 4 a team of volunteers from Bedford’s Rotary Club and Garden Club worked together to create new raised beds in the Lillian Dutton Memorial Herb Garden at the Job Lane House on North Road.How did the work get done? The Herb Garden committee along with Nat Brown planned the design, relying on Jo Champney, chair of the committee, for guidance. Then the Rotary Club took care of the work.
Volunteers Andy Borella, Nat Brown, Terry Parker, Cliff Rober, Susanna Natti, Patsy Lloyd, Bob Cassidy, Victor Tom and Peter Colgan represented the Bedford Rotary Club; Quin Houck came as a Scout; and Bridget Clayton, Judy Brown and Priscilla Grunes from the Bedford Garden Club were all part of the team.
It was hours of work, but it was such a perfect weather work day. Andy Borella was the first to arrive and the beds were measured, squared off, all four corners, and the wood was angled correctly and corners nailed, then brought into each bed. Some with shovels were hard at work to make space for the finished beds. To prepare for the new beds we had pulled out the boards and cut out a lot of thyme. The group worked well together, like a family of brothers and sisters and enjoyed doing the work. Nat said he liked the project because it was for a good cause, and it will be “lasing”. We trust that the new boards will last for 20-30 years. The cedar boards that we removed had been placed in 2002 by Jo Champney and Betty French.
New stone dust was placed in the garden walk ways, and some on the walk. The bricks in front of the Garden Shed were replaced by Nat from the work done on the sill a few years ago when Art Smith put in the new “old” 1700’s door. We appreciate the work done by Nat ~ something he really likes to do.
Another project was replacing some of the barn battens, and Patsy Lloyd quickly stained those. Quin Houck swept the barn loft, and Terry Parker swept the other side of the loft and put away our tools carefully wrapping each one with packing paper. Peter Colgan and Cliff Rober were quick to remove the old tree stumps that were no longer used for the log bench under the lilac.
While this was going on, the front garden was coming to life with Bridget Clayton and Suzanna Natti. Inside Sharon McDonald, Pat Pellegrini and Lee Yates were hard at work with spring cleaning.
Speaking for myself, I was there ~ don’t ask me what I didn’t do. At day’s end I locked up the barn and the house, and took another photo of the lovely raised beds.
The Bedford Garden Club and the Friends of the Job Lane House and the Bedford Historical Preservation Committee want to thank everyone. It was a stellar job.
