Very early on the morning of Saturday, May 18, Bedford Common will be abuzz with activity when dozens of volunteers prepare for the 60th Annual First Parish Plant & Craft Fair that will open at 10 am.

They’ll be putting the final touches on the plant area, helping the craftspeople unload their wares,  listening to the first of the live music entertainers, serving morning coffee and donuts to the workers and the customers waiting in line for the plant area to open when the clock strikes 10.

The fair features a wide selection of heritage perennials from members’ gardens  along with hearty locally-grown annuals and perennials. There is also a “Grocery Garden” where you’ll find veggie 6-paks, tomato plants and herbs.

Come early for the best plants (a few enthusiasts arrive before 9 am!) and stay to peruse John Gibbons’s used book offerings; visit a variety of craftspeople or Chip-In Farm’s petting zoo; enjoy a traditional cook-out lunch and an outstanding bake sale; or have your face painted by First Parish youth (face painting will take place from noon to 2). There will also be live music and a drum circle during the fair.

The Annual Plant & Craft Fair is a fundraiser that supports the work of First Parish in the community. The fair will take place rain or shine, but has scheduled a snow date (May 19, from noon to 3pm) in case of wet and very cold weather.

To learn more, visit the Fair’s web page, https://www.uubedford.org/plantfair;  e-mail [email protected] with your questions; or check out these images from earlier fairs.
