Who, in your mind, exemplifies the term “citizen-volunteer”?

Maybe you’ve worked with this person for a Bedford organization or served together on a committee. Maybe you have a neighbor or a friend who you marvel about, wondering how s/he finds the time and the energy to devote to the community.

If someone comes to mind—right now, while you’re reading this— you may be picturing the next Citizen of the Year.

Assistant Town Manager Jessica Porter reports that nominations are being accepted now until August 2 for Citizen of the Year and that applications/guidelines are available on the Town’s website:  http://www.bedfordma.gov/home/news/2013-citizen-of-the-year-nominations

All manner of volunteerism to town organizations is considered worthy, however elected officials are ineligible and Town staff— who are also residents— must be noted for contributions unrelated to their employment.

Citizen of the Year award recipients are chosen by a committee composed of town residents. The duties of the Citizen of the Year are largely ceremonial and include leading the Bedford Day parade, appearing as the guest of honor for the Citizen of the Year party at the end of September and flipping the switch for the holiday tree lighting on the Common.
