Lynn Oates tells us “For the past 19 years we have been able to honor the life and memory of  [my brother] Danny in a way that not only helps us as a family, but also the community that we live in and remain active participants of. The members of Frank W. Thompson Masonic Lodge, of which my father has been a member of for many years, have been gracious enough to establish this memorial which has provided over $75,000 in scholarships since 1998.

“Without the continued support and assistance of the Bedford Fire and Police, sponsors, family, friends, and especially Lisa Freed, this race would have never been able to accomplish all that it has.”

There will be a Flatbread Fundraiser to benefit the Oates Scholarship fund from 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday, September 15. Every pizza sold will have a portion giving to the Danny Oates Scholarship Fund and we plan to have pre-registered shirts & numbers available for pickup from 11-3pm that day as well.

A pancake breakfast First Church

The First Church of Christ Congregational, UCC of Bedford, is hosting a pancake breakfast, free to military families and veterans on Bedford Day morning.  The event will start at 7:30 am and conclude at 10:30 am, just before the parade begins.

The general public is welcome to enjoy breakfast, with proceeds (suggested donation of $3.00 per adult or $10.00 per family) with proceeds benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project, https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/.  For more information, please contact the Church Office at 781-275-7951.

Valet bike parking, and bicycle news for Bedford Day; Bike donations needed

The Friends of the Minuteman Bikeway, celebrating the Bikeway’s 20 year anniversary will again provide secure bicycle parking for any one bicycling to the Bedford Day, Sat., Sept 21, activities. Come visit our booth and get the new Minuteman Bicycle Map, updates on the many exciting bicycle projects in town and the region, and Bob Sawyer’s “Shop Bedford by Bike” map which helps you avoid the busy traffic on Great Rd.
At our booth you can share your bicycle experiences, ask for advice, hear about our school programs, and get an update on the Minuteman Extension project. Do you find many roads in Bedford uncomfortable to bike on as we do? Please support our “Bicycle Master Plan” proposal to make Bedford a more bicycle friendly community.

Fresh from our consultant after a 10 month study, are recommendations to improve “navigation” on the Minuteman Bikeway, including better and uniform signage, modernization of the intersections (remove those antiquated gates!), and public education.

To acknowledge his combined 40 years+ service to bicycling, sidewalks, and trails committee work in town, we will be adding Ralph Hammond to our ‘Bicycle Honor Roll’ Thank you Ralph!

We are still accepting serviceable (need not be running) bikes for our JGMS Bike Safety classes. Please send us an email ([email protected]) with a short description of the bike(s) to set up a pickup date.

POMS

The Bedford Patrons of Music Students (POMS) will march in the Bedford Day parade and host a booth across from the town hall at the festivities following the parade.

Come visit our booth where we will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, apple crisp and all new rally towels.  Find out more about private music lessons.

Bedford POMS is an all-volunteer organization that supports music students, music teachers, and music programs in the Bedford Public Schools.  POMS arranges private music lessons with a network of professional musicians for 17 instruments, including voice.  POMS is able to keep the rates reasonable because the overhead costs for this program are extremely low: administration of the program is done entirely by POMS volunteers, and the schools provide rooms for lessons free of charge to the teachers.

“The POMS private lesson program provides students with valuable, one-on-one time with a teacher,” says Bedford Schools’ Music Department Chair Nicole O’Toole. “This extra attention helps these students to build a solid foundation of skills, to develop healthy practice habits, and to become the best musicians that they can possibly be.
