Established in 1849, this site replaced the town’s overcrowded Old Burying Ground.  Its construction reflected the tenets of the Rural Cemetery Movement, which called for spacious grounds in a rural, park-like setting. affording a place for quiet contemplation.

Because it offered family plots and the Old Burying Ground did not, some families transferred their loved ones from the old cemetery to the new. This gate on Shawsheen Road is the original entrance, built in 1849.

The gates flanking the Great Road entrance, known as the Memorial Gates,  were erected in 1906 as a gift from Mrs. Sarah Lane in memory of Lucius Page Lane.
