Acceptance of Hartwell Road Allows Improvements

Potholes along Hartwell Road indicate the need for improvement

On March 6 the Finance Committee reviewed Article 7 of the warrant for Annual Town Meeting which calls for a Street Acceptance of Hartwell Road. Improvements on a portion of Hartwell Road have been held up for several years because the current layout is too narrow. Now the Town has acquired rights to strips of land along the road from multiple owners.

The 2,090-foot section runs from the western edge of Instrumentation Laboratories to Concord Road. The only property not yet acquired is a 3,030-foot frontage of Instrumentation Laboratories. It is hoped that the company will grant the land to the town, but if necessary the town can acquire it by eminent domain.

Acceptance of Hartwell Road allows the Town to move forward to build a new road using either Town funds or State Chapter 90 funds.

In response to a question about whether there would be a sidewalk and bike path, Town Manger Rick Reed said the road is too narrow for both, but that a sidewalk from Hartwell Farms to Concord Road would be part of the project.
