Selectmen & School Committee Grateful for State Funding to Support Hanscom Students

July 28, 2014

Submitted by Margot Fleischman, Chair of the Bedford Board of Selectmen, and Brad Hafer, Chair of the Bedford School Committee.

Op-EdWe are writing today, because we want to express our gratitude for the important work done in the State Legislature for the town of Bedford.

For the past nine years, the state has provided funding to help the town’s public schools with educating students that live on Hanscom Air Force Base.  This funding is crucial to our town, because, in our eyes, the students we have from Hanscom are crucial to our schools.

The life experiences of kids living on Hanscom provide richness in our community that is unparalleled in the Commonwealth.  That being said, the resources necessary for providing a quality education are also unique, and this is where the work of the Legislature is so deeply appreciated.

State Senator Michael Barrett (D – Lexington) and State Representative Ken Gordon (D – Burlington) were tireless advocates in the successful renewal of our funding in this year’s state budget.  Language actually guaranteeing the funding was in the final, consensus budget.

Guaranteeing this funding for Hanscom students is important.  Sen. Barrett and Rep. Gordon know this, and they worked to safeguard Hanscom students and the entire Bedford school system.

For their efforts, we simply want to say thank you.

To the conference committee—deciding on the final budget language—and the Legislature as a whole, we are thrilled with your careful consideration of the impact that the small funding guarantee will have on the lives of students in Bedford.

We say Bedford students because, while the funding is specifically for students coming from Hanscom, all of Bedford, and the entire Commonwealth, benefit from our continued support of Hanscom Air Force Base.

We are proud to educate the students of Hanscom families, and we look forward to ensuring the Bedford school system’s continued success with this special program.
