Dreams of August Baseball for Bedford’s Baystate A and Baystate C Teams

August 1, 2014

bsb-logo-smAugust is to young baseball players what October is to major leaguers—a quasi-mythic time of year when miracles happen, legends are born, and championships are won. For the boys of summer in Bedford playing in Baystate C and Baystate A, dreams of August baseball are coming true, as both teams have big games coming up on their schedules.

Bedford C wrapped up second round play on Wednesday and now gets to enjoy a full week off from games before the C Division Tournament of Champions (TOC) kicks off on August 6. The Baby Bucs will be placed in one of four 4-team divisions and will play each team in their division once over a seven-day period. The top two teams from that division, along with six teams from the other three divisions (two from each division), will then advance into the final weekend tournament on August 16-17 to play for the championship. When the TOC schedule is released early next week, The Citizen will be sharing the schedule information for those three games.

Bedford A had an excellent second round, but fell short to Natick in last weekend’s tournament in Marblehead. Despite that setback, the Dawgs kicked off third round play with a tightly-contested 4-1 victory over Waltham on Thursday night at Page Field. As of today they’re just out of a qualification spot for the A Division Tournament of Champions, but with nine teams within five points of each other in the standings, if Bedford makes a strong third round showing they could play their way in to the championship tournament. The next home game for Bedford A is Monday, at 5:45 against West Cambridge.

As these boys enter their fifth month of baseball (spring baseball began in early April), their commitment to their teams and to baseball is worthy of commendation; they have brought a lot of honor to Bedford both with their play and their competitive spirit. Here’s hoping that both teams make deep runs into the playoff tournaments.
