K-12 Equity and Diversity Support Committee is Forming, and You’re Invited – September 8 at 7:30 pm

August 14, 2014

Bedford-Embraces-Diversity_Dear Bedford,

The school community sub-group that grew out of the anti-Semitic forums last year has evolved into the “K-12 Equity and Diversity Support Committee.”  The group will meet monthly and welcomes all interested community members to discuss equity and diversity issues that impact the Bedford Public Schools.  To learn more, join us at the next meeting on September 8th from 7:30-9:00pm in the BHS library.

One of our first initiatives has been to obtain input on language from community members.  Language has the power to be an ally or to put someone down.  We can all benefit from building our cultural capacity and learning how to be more sensitive with the words we are using.  In order to educate ourselves and pass on information to the schools, we have developed a survey to obtain information related to “language” when teaching and learning about historically oppressed groups.  The survey only has four questions.  Please consider taking the survey to help the K-12 Equity and Diversity Support Committee better understand what language is important for educators to know as they look at curriculum through the lens of culture.

Please forward the survey link https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CultureLanguage to all relevant constituents, organizations, and groups within the Bedford community.  You may also take the survey several times in order to represent multiple group memberships.

We look forward to learning more about you from the survey and hope that you can attend our next meeting on September 8th.  We plan to meet on the first Monday of the month going forward and will post via The Bedford Citizen and email lists.

Kind regards,
The K-12 Equity and Diversity Support Committee
