Two Bedford organizations have teamed up to hold a joint evening program meeting with a Luigi’s lasagna dinner and a nationally-known speaker of interest to both groups. The Bedford Garden Club and the Bedford Historical Society will hold their meetings together on Wednesday evening, Oct. 22 in Upper Fellowship Hall of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 25 The Great Rd.

Guest speaker will be nationally-recognized lecturer, garden historian, ethnobotanist and garden writer John Forti, curator of Historic Landscapes at the Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, NH.

Forti will present “Historic Landscapes – Creating a Sense of Time and Place.”  His illustrated talk will bring to life the unique and living history of plants that have a defining presence in New England, to foster a better understanding of the most tried and true plants and our role in preservation.

Punch and appetizers provided by members of the Historical Society will be offered starting at 6 pm, with dinner starting around 6:30.  Salads and desserts will be supplied by members of both groups.   Guest speaker Forti will begin his illustrated presentation around 8 pm, after announcements by Garden Club President Carol Amick and Historical Society President Don Corey.

The public is invited to attend this event, but because the lasagna must be ordered based on the attendance, all participants must reserve dinner space.  Persons interested in coming to the dinner should contact the Bedford Historical Society’s office ([email protected] or 781-275-7276) to make reservations.

Anyone wishing to hear Mr. Forti but not attend the dinner does not need to reserve a seat and should arrive at Fellowship Hall around 8 pm.

Mr. Forti previously served as the Director of Horticulture at Plimoth Plantation Museum where the gardens and seed program he created brought international attention to the preservation of Pilgrim and Wampanoag heirloom crops.

He founded and serves as board chair for Slow Food Seacoast, part of an international “slow food” movement designed to offset “fast food” by promoting the preservation of traditional and regional cuisine and encouraging the farming of plants, seeds and livestock characteristic of local ecosystems.  He serves on the board of the New England Unit of the Herb Society of America, and won the 2014 Award for Excellence in Horticulture from that national organization.  He also recently received an award for “Civic Improvement through Gardens” from the Garden Club of America.

Mr. Forti lectures across the country.  He has appeared in two New York Times feature articles, has been interviewed frequently on National Public Radio, and has thousands of Facebook followers at The Heirloom Gardener – John Forti; his website is www.jforti.com/
