Bedford Police Department Releases Strategic Plan

October 31, 2014

Submitted by John Guilfoil for the Bedford Police Department

BPDpatchChief Robert Bongiorno is pleased to announce that the Bedford Police Department (BPD) has released its updated Strategic Plan, aimed to lead significant mprovements for the town of Bedford and for the police department.

In 2013 Chief Bongiorno initiated an effort to update the last Strategic Plan, which was completed in 2009. The strategic themes embraced for this plan embody the concept of
“P.R.I.D.E.” (partnering, resources, improvement, development, and engage).

Some goals include increasing personnel and specialized training programs, and an improved method of documenting individual officer and employee job responsibilities.

The department also hopes to add a K-9 unit, train officers on the proper use of Tasers, and upgrade communications and computer equipment. The department will also seek to create a formal “Equipment Replacement Program” to determine when equipment is approaching the end of its usable life.

BPD also hopes to add additional traffic officers and use analytics to improve traffic flow in Bedford.

These goals are expected to be worked on in a 3-5 year period.

“I am extremely proud to lead this group of professionals who serve the community with integrity and compassion,” Chief Bongiorno said. “This plan will enable us to move forward, serving our community that much better.”

This most recent planning was initiated and conducted by a third party consulting organization. The report from this planning effort was drafted in early 2014 and included employee interviews, surveys, and municipal government and citizen input.

Ten members of the BPD then met to pull it all together: Chief Bongiorno, Lt. James Graham, Sgt. Patrick Towle, Sgt. Paul Saunders, Sgt. Ronald Undzis, Sgt. Richard Vitale, Off. Kristen Dineen, Off. Steven Waite, Off. Marc Saucier, and ECO Jeffrey Vinciulla.

The working group also re-wrote the department’s mission statement to better reflect and shed light on the BPD, while connecting with the Bedford community.

The BPD hopes to get started on these goals as soon as possible. For more information, visit https://www.bedfordma.gov/police or click here to download the full report.
