“What a great way to spend a chilly Saturday night; at a Kammerwerke concert right here in Bedford Center at the First Parish. The music was beautiful… lovely… outstanding!” Lorrie Dunham

Variations on Lorrie Dunham’s sentiments were heard many times last Saturday night as the Kammerwerke Double Wind Quintet under the direction of Alan Pearlmutter presented the inaugural performance of its 2014-15 concert series at First Parish Unitarian Universalist on the Common in Bedford.

In its fifth year as an ensemble performing mostly classical music written or arranged for the unusual combination of ten winds, Kammerwerke will present two more Bedford concerts in its current series:

Last Saturday’s concert, titled “French Frolic” included Claude Debussy’s Petite Suite, arr. Stephaan Brakkee, André Caplet’s Suite Persane, Jean Françaix’s Sept danses d’après le ballet “Les malheurs de Sophie,” and Emmanuel Chabrier’s Huit pièces pittoresques, arr. Jean Françaix. The concert ended with an encore: “Les Toréadors” from Georges Bizet’s Carmen Suite.

The pieces were received enthusiastically by the audience, responding to the lushness, emotionality, spirit and beauty of the music and the playing of the ensemble. Here is what some of the concert attendees had to say:

“Kammerwerke is a real jewel of an ensemble with such playing ability…and great musicality. A number of players easily switched between instruments such as Flute to Piccolo, B-flat to A Clarinets or to Bass Clarinet, Oboe to English Horn, Bassoon to Contra Bassoon. It was such a pleasure to hear this group, I look forward to the concert in January,”  remarked Bea Brunkhorst.

“It’s such a gift to be able to drive five minutes to see world class musicians put on such a wonderful concert. I will definitely be back for more,”  said Carol Krusemark.
