Things Our Kids Do: Memorial Day Edition

May 22, 2015

By Dan Brosgol

Things-our-kids-doI’m not exactly sure how it happened, but Memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer is already here. Actually, I have a good idea as to how it happened—spring lasted for three weeks as it was freezing cold all the way until the end of April–but who really cares.  All I know is that the long weekend is almost upon us, there’s no youth baseball or softball for a full week, and I’m not working on Sunday again until September.  Have yourself a great holiday, but before you leave, spend 90 seconds reading about cool stuff that Bedford kids are up to.

True Colors At Davis

500 kids at Davis School certainly can’t be all in the same place at the same time, so this week the Davis School—our little jewel of love, support, and age-8-and-under absolute cuteness—hosted three consecutive mornings of spring concerts. This year’s theme was based on the Dr. Seuss book “My Many-Colored Days,” and the classes all dressed up as colors of the rainbow and sang, danced, and played instruments to showcase their musical talents. While that was sufficiently adorable to keep all of the parents in good spirits, the great and climactic moment was when the kids sang Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” as the grand finale and invited the parents to sing along. In case you have forgotten, that classic anthem came out in 1986 (aka the year I was in second grade), so it’s amazing to think that while a song was popular when I was of Davis School age, now it’s sufficiently old enough to be considered school–assembly worthy.

Friday Night Lights

This Friday night was baseball night in Bedford, as 10 of our 11 American and National League teams were in action. Three 5:45 games were on the NL schedule, and in a rare instance of my two sons not having games at exactly the same time, I got to watch my 9-year old in his game at JGMS for the first several innings. Come 7:15 though, the bright lights of Page Field beckoned, and I hustled over to center stage for the second end of the American League twi-night doubleheader. When the early game ended, with the Red Sox prevailing over the Angels, the A’s and Orioles got underway at 7:45 amidst a throng of parents, grandparents, baseball fans, and National League players and coaches fresh off their earlier games. On that brightly-lit crucible of grass and stomach-turning baseball tension, the A’s came out with a victory that kept them in first place as the first half of the season came to a close. There really is nothing like night baseball at Page for the biggest of little kids, so make sure to check out the next slate of Friday night games on June 5.

Blue Devils

There’s apparently something in the Bedford water for our soccer players, as six of Bedford’s 20 travel soccer teams have yet to lose a game as we hit the midway point of the spring travel season. Congratulations to Stephen Dulgarian’s girls U14 team (4-0-2 for the season), Mike O’Shaughnessy’s girls U12 team (3-0-2), Joy Wilson’s girls U10 team (5-0-0), Jenny Stewart’s girls U9 team (5-0-0), Tara Capobianco’s boys U10 team (4-0-1), and Andy Hurley’s boys U90 team (5-0-0) for their sparkling campaigns so far this spring. Five of those six teams have home games this weekend (click here to check the schedule), so if you’re looking for some good times this Saturday, why not come out to watch some soccer?
