The Bedford Citizen invites you to join us in welcoming Dan Kennedy, associate professor of journalism and author of The Wired City: Re-Imagining Journalism and Civic Life in the Post-Newspaper Age, at the Bedford library on Saturday, May 30, at 10 am.  Kennedy will explore the critical link between journalism and democracy in his remarks.

From the earliest days of American history, be it as a Revolutionary broadside, a spirited editorial, or breaking news sent from the front by a war correspondent, journalism has been the primary vehicle for connecting us to the events that shape our world.  The Bedford Citizen, celebrating its third anniversary in June, has a specific focus on providing information about local civic life to town residents to stimulate citizen participation and inform decision making.

As a digital resource, The Citizen is on the cutting edge of change in what Kennedy describes as life after the demise of newspapers.  Alternative ways of getting the news abound with the constant expansion of social media – but are such vehicles effective? Do they reach to the local level?  Are they financially sustainable?  Is the quality of community life more or less robust with these new tools?  These are important – and fascinating – questions to consider in the new wired world we live in.  Kennedy will share his perspective and there will be time for questions from the audience.
