Special to The Bedford Citizen

Graduating seniors Michael Mason, Matthew Laferriere and Victor Chen started Bedford High School’s first ever Ultimate Frisbee team  this year.

They interviewed and brought in a great coach, Aman Shah, former Ultimate player from Belmont Hill and Johns Hopkins University, who volunteers his time to coach the team and has brought lots of spirit to this already enthusiastic group.  The team is open to guys and girls (although none joined this year) and there are about 20 kids on this year’s team.

Their record is 7-3 and they are playing at a D2 level.  The team is really proud to bring this new sport to BHS!

Students interested in next year’s Ultimate Frisbee team will be able to sign up at the Activity Fair when school reopens in September.

Ultimate is a fantastic game and can be fun for players with a wide range of abilities and skills. For more info see https://www.usaultimate.org/resources/officiating/rules/default.aspx#10simplerules

It is generally self-officiated and one reason I think it is a better team sport than the usual offerings is the concept of “the spirit of the game.” The following quote is from the page linked above:

“In Ultimate, an intentional foul is considered cheating and a gross offense against the spirit of sportsmanship. Often a player is in a position where it is clearly to a player’s advantage to foul or commit some infraction, but that player is morally bound to abide by the rules. The integrity of Ultimate depends on each player’s responsibility to uphold the spirit of the game, and this responsibility should not be taken lightly.”
