FY16 Budget, Including Funds to Support Hanscom Students at BHS, Signed Today by Gov. Baker

Governor Baker backs efforts of Rep. Gordon and Sen. Barrett by signing Bedford’s reimbursement for the education of  children of military families

By State Senator Mike Barrett (D-Barrett) and Representative Ken Gordon (D-Bedford)

Barrett-Gordon-LogoState Senator Mike Barrett (D-Barrett) and Representative Ken Gordon (D-Bedford) are delighted to announce that Governor Charles Baker included Bedford’s $517,000 reimbursement for the education of the children of military families living at Hanscom AFB in the State Budget for FY 2016.

Each year, Bedford High School welcomes an average of 100 students who live at Hanscom.  While the students who live in town as well as the administration and faculty benefits from the contributions provided by these students, they come without revenue to the town, since the land they live on is not taxed as a federal installation. The federal government pays less than 20 percent of the cost of the students’ schooling.

“The funding of this item is crucial for Bedford,” said Rep. Gordon. “I am pleased to see the governor make a strong financial commitment to support our armed forces.”

“This has been a top priority for us since day one,” Barrett said.  “Even though the Legislature voted for the funding in the budget, it wasn’t a done deal until the governor signed off.  I’m pleased Representative Gordon and I were able to come through.”

The delegation accomplished permanent funding for the line item, but recent cuts to the FY15 budget left the funding for the item in some doubt.  The governor’s inclusion of the item addressed this concern.
