Tree-dressAn unusual volume of foot traffic enlivened Bedford center on Sunday afternoon when the Christmas in the Village house tour drew scores of participants to homes and businesses decked out in holiday splendor.

“The Bedford Chamber of Commerce is grateful to Suzanne Koller of Suzanne & Co. for her generous sponsorship of the Holiday House tour again this year,” said Executive Director Maureen Sullivan.

Several of the stops along the tour featured holiday music: pianist Jim Zaroulis of the Real School of Music; classical guitarist George Parker; flute and guitar duo, Song of the Lark; and the First Parish Quartet – Carole Krusemark, Laura Kalb, Ellen Groves and Larry Herz.

The homes and their décor ranged from the simple to the sublime, and each had its own particular highlight.

Historic Rufus Porter murals provided the background for a unique holiday tree. With a superstructure forming the bodice and sliver dancing slippers nestled in cotton wool below, the tree and its twinkling lights formed the skirt of a fantasy ball gown.

Original house plans, hand-drawn by a Boston architectural firm at the end of the 19th century and found when they dropped from the ceiling of a room that was under renovation, were on display.

There were amazing ribbon swags with hundreds of fairy lights along atop windows, and festive holographic spectacles that transformed each tiny light into a magical, moving vision were piled into a bowl.

A splendid renovation included the addition of a great room where the Christmas tree was situated next to the fireplace, along with a barn behind the house, reached via a very elegant garden.

Even a pair of nurseries for an older sister and her baby brother were beautifully decorated for the season.

A ceramics studio holding an Open Studio sale and the offices of Suzanne & Co. were decorated for the holiday and rounded out the tour.

At the traditional last stop, Bedford’s First Church of Christ’s tea room served home-baked sweet and savory bites and with a background of classical guitar music.

The church’s sanctuary décor followed Pastor John Castricum’s December focus on angels, and their Holiday Shop was filled with decorations and gifts.

Proceeds from the house tour support the activities of the Bedford Chamber of Commerce, including The Charles Hume Scholarship, awarded to local students.
