Bedford Schools LogoUpon the initiative of our facilities director, Taissir Alani, the town and schools are jointly exploring a solar energy option that could save the town between $3,315,952 and $6,405,793 over the next 20 years.  Consistent with the town-wide Energy Task Force’s focus on green energy and increased efficiencies, the proposed project would generate more electricity than the schools consume.

PowerOptions (our energy consortium) has partnered with SunEdison, which is a global solar energy service provider, to offer Bedford the opportunity to install solar panels at no start-up cost to the town. The proposed options include installations on the roofs of John Glenn Middle School and Bedford High School and/or on canopies constructed in the parking lots adjacent to the two schools.

Even though utilities are no longer in the school department’s budget, the School Committee is interested in exploring the project’s potential benefit to the town. At the last School Committee meeting, members voiced some concern over the aesthetic impact of constructing parking lot canopies, and stressed the importance of inviting the community into the discussion.
