Always smiling and eager to help, Evelyn Stickney was a mainstay of the Bedford Free Public Library business office for over 36 years, managing billing, payroll and employee records.  She cheerfully guided new employees through the mysteries of schedules and library policies, and she was at my side, a loyal helper through the first years of budgets and annual reports, when I became Library Director in 1991.

Many will remember Evelyn, prior to the library’s building expansion, working efficiently in her tiny office with a collection of colorful glass bottles arrayed along the windowsill. She welcomed everyone who passed by looking for help or simply stopping to say hello.

Calling hours will take place at the Bedford Funeral Home from 1 to 3 pm on Sunday, February 7, followed by a funeral service.  https://www.bedfordfuneralhome.com/home/index.cfm/obituaries/view/fh_id/10250/id/3584104

Revere-BellsBoth Evelyn and her husband Ed were strongly committed to the library, she as a long-term employee and he as a skilled volunteer at the circulation desk and behind the scenes. And both were supportive during the many changes as technology was introduced to the library and a major addition was constructed.

In ‘The Bells of Paul Revere, his sons and grandsons” the Stickneys documented 134 church bells cast in the Revere foundry and traveled to churches from Maine to Alabama to document their discoveries. Originally published as a 20-page leaflet, their book remains a standard research reference with dozens of Google citations.

The Stickneys donated major gifts to the new library building, underwriting the construction of the main circulation desk and furnishing the Bedford Collection Room in memory of their son Kent.
