The Citizen’s Scholarship Foundation Dollars for Scholars (CSF) Trivia Night was a little like Jeopardy, a little like PBS’s High School Quiz Show, a little like Name That Tune and a lot of fun with a little friendly competition benefiting the program of Bedford.

A capacity crowd filled the St. Michael’s Parish Hall for the 2nd Annual CSF Trivia Night on February 6. Many tables of 10 attendees brought picnic suppers or local take out favorites for a group dinner to fuel themselves prior to the official start of the trivia competition. More than one table celebrated the birthday of a table member with birthday cake and a song. Desserts and non-alcoholic beverages were provided.

Bedford resident and experienced Trivia Master Debbie Hughes put together 10 rounds of challenging and fun trivia. Tables were asked to answer 10 questions of varying degrees of difficulty in each round. Question categories included:Identify the Picture, History/Geography, Who Am I?, Name the TV/Movie Tune, Borrowed Foreign Words, Name the Film, Science/Nature, Sports/Leisure and General Knowledge. Table conversation was animated and frequently in whispers as table members considered possible answers and protected their answers from being overheard by neighboring tables. Each table submitted one answer sheet that was graded as each round was completed. As correct answers were revealed, it was not uncommon to hear, “Ugh, I should have known that!”

The Winning Teams

First Place team members included Anne Kerwin, Rosie O’Brien, Nancy Drinan, Kevin Drinan, Nancy Phillips, Jim O’Brien, Jess Noble, Kate Kerwin-Mason, SteveKerwin and Steve Phillips.

Round after round, Table #15, the 2015 defending champions, and Table #5, the Bedford Education Foundation (BEF) Board and Friends (who had a strong 2015 finish), were neck in neck. At the end of regular play of 10 rounds, the two tables were tied for first place.

After a tie breaker round, they were still tied. After a second tie breaker, they continued to remain even in the standings. To determine first and second place winners and cash awards, the score of each team from one of the more difficult category rounds was used to break the tie.

Second Place team members included Laura Burgund, Jennifer Klein, Noelle Oliveira, Jen Kelley, Jenn Cunningham, Meg McAllister, Mary Hurley and Jim Hurley.

With the Help of  Some Friends

Thank you to the generosity of donors Arts and Flowers, Asiana Restaurant, Bedford Auto Supply, Bedford Florist, Bedford Jewelers, Great Wall Restaurant, Holi Restaurant, Kens Deli, Lincoln Liquors, The Paper Store, Prince Street Café, Red Heat Tavern and Steve’s House of Pizza.

Trivia players had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for an interesting array of gift baskets that were donated by CSF Board members. Lucky raffle ticket winners went home with lottery ticket trees, assorted wines, gourmet items, Chip-in Farm favorites, and more.

Looking Back on the Evening

Jen Kelley, BEF Co-President commented, “The Bedford Education Foundation was thrilled to once again field a team of enthusiastic board members and friends for our second CSF Trivia Night. Much like last year, the night was great fun, and we enjoyed the lively spirit of competition. Many of us at the BEF would come out for a night of challenging trivia any day of the week, so having the added benefit of supporting such a wonderful cause was perfect for us!”

Bobbie Ennis reported, “Some tables were groups of friends, some tables represented formal groups, i.e. Bedford Rotary, Bedford Education Foundation (BEF), Bedford School Committee, Board of Selectmen, Bedford Planning Board, BHS students, CSF Board members, Recipients of CSF Scholarships, parents of athletes and people who just love trivia.”

Ron Stewart, CSF of Bedford historian and past president stated, “The Trivia Night was a resounding and very popular success on all fronts. It helped set a new record of scholarship fundraising which will be awarded to deserving high school graduates at the 51st Annual CSF of Bedford Dollars for Scholars Awards Ceremony to be held at the Bedford Glen Hotel on May 25, 2016.The organization is supported completely by an all-volunteer board and the wonderful generosity of Bedford residents and businesses.”
