Bedford Garden Club Scholarship Chair Judy Brown announced that the club will award two scholarships to Bedford students in 2016. Applications for the awards of $1,000 each are due on March 31, and recipients will be announced during the Citizens Scholarship Foundation awards program in June.

“We are interested in supporting students who are looking toward a career in horticulture or a related field,” said Brown. The scholarship application lists agriculture, botany, conservation, ecology, forestry, landscape design and environmental science as possible related fields.

Applications for the local Bedford Garden Club scholarships are available from the Bedford High School and Shawsheen Valley Regional Vocational Technical School guidance departments. The application may also be downloaded from the Bedford Garden Club website, https://www.bedfordgardenclub.org/community/scholarship/

Questions regarding the two local scholarships can be directed to Judy Brown at New England Nurseries, 781-275-2525.

Bedford students are also invited to apply for scholarships awarded by the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts and the National Garden Club.

The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts (GCFM) – the statewide organization of garden clubs of which the Bedford Garden Club is a member – annually awards 11 scholarships, of $1,000 each. Two national scholarships, of GCFM scholarships will be considered for the national awards as well. Applications are due March 1.

The GCFM scholarships are available to students majoring in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design or architecture, conservation, forestry, agronomy, city planning, environmental students, land management, botany, biology and allied subjects. Applicants must have maintained a legal residence in Massachusetts for at least one year, have a minimum “B” average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale), have good character and have financial need. A Scholarship Committee of the GCFM will determine each student’s eligibility based on a completed application package. Only one application is required per student to be considered for all 11 GCFM scholarships and the National Garden Club scholarships. Awards are available to both undergraduate and graduate students pursuing arts and/or sciences degrees in various horticultural-related areas; three of the scholarships require that the student attend the University of Massachusetts.

Applications, financial aid forms and additional information for the GCFM and National Garden Club scholarships are available on the GCFM website, https://www.gcfm.org/Education/Scholarships/GCFMScholarships.aspx.
