In its 51st year, Bedford’s Citizen Scholarship Foundation, also known as Dollars for Scholars, a program of Scholarship America, awarded more than $116,000 in grants to Bedford graduates this week.

The awards are supported by named scholarships recognizing Bedford individuals and organizations, or funded through CSF’s annual Phon-a-thon organized by Alma and Sal Pomponi and staffed by Bedford High School students. There are scholarships endowed by companies no longer doing business locally, and while some are funded through the income from the organization’s successful annual Trivia Night, others are funded by contributions by former students wishing to honor a well-loved teacher.

BHS Principal Dr. Henry Turner noted that he came to Bedford when the Class of 2016 began their high school careers, and they are all ending their connection with the school at the same time. Dr. Turner arrived from Newton South High School in July, 2012 and will leave in June to become principal of Newton North High School.

Thirty-year Master of Ceremonies Mike Rosenberg quipped, as he drew out a mismatched pair of sneakers that “may have come from one of the donors” — a local discount store no longer in business, that he could recycle jokes from year to year since the audience is always new. The comment drew a big laugh, as it has for several years.

Sandra Bartlett -
Sandra Bartlett presented the Farwell Founders Award

In presenting the Farwell Founders’ Award, Sandra Bartlett reminded the graduates to collect a pencil from the reception table, and take it home. “It’s just potential until you pick it up and sharpen it,” she said. The pencil can then become, she pointed out, a tool for writing, drawing, or inventing something. “And there’s an eraser at one end,” she added, “on the chance that changes need to be made.” Bartlett made the trip from her home in Rhode Island to participate in the ceremony.
