The Bedford High Marching Band performed at the Billerica Marching Band Invitational band competition sponsored by the New England Scholastic Band Association (NESBA) at Marshall Middle School in Billerica on October 15. The BHS band came away with a combined score of 77.50 out of a possible 100. The score earned Division 1 commendations for first place, best music, best percussion and best color guard, as well as a silver medal in the overall competition.

“This was a tremendous accomplishment for the marching band, which has 30 members this year and only meets two nights per week as a strictly extra-curricular activity,” noted Band Director James Felker.

The Marching Band has surmounted multiple hurdles this year according to Felker. “There is no class time available to learn music in school, so the band started learning the program, both music and marching, in the evenings during the week that school began.  Many marching bands have a week-long band camp in the summer before school begins, but limited availability of necessary field facilities in the summer makes it very difficult to hold such a program. The First Church of Christ, Congregational Church on Great Road generously donated the use of their facilities to the band for a few evenings over the summer to help get a head start on learning music, allowing many kids the opportunity to get acquainted with the music before school began.”

The band will compete in their second NESBA event of the season on at 4:15 on Saturday, October 22, at Reading Memorial HS, 62 Oakland Road in Reading. “The kids would love to see friends from our community in the stands to support them,” invited Felker.
