Every year during the holiday season, Upper Elementary students at Lexington Montessori School (LMS) participate in an Oxfam Hunger Banquet. Five of those participants this year were from Bedford.

LMS Students do reenactments to learn about hunger in the world through the lenses of inequitable distribution, individuals’ true stories, and circumstances outside of human control. To do this, students draw randomly high, middle or low income status and are given lunch in quantity, variety, and nutritional value according to their status.  The number of students from the classrooms assigned to each income level reflects the percentages worldwide.

The Hunger Banquet, as described by Oxfam, is an “interactive event that brings hunger and poverty issues to life.” For over 40 years, Oxfam American has been inspiring schools around the country to create this memorable classroom experience.
