Music, both new and familiar, will be among the highlights of “Celebrating MLK’s Vision Together,” the town’s first Martin Luther King Jr. Day unity breakfast planned for Monday, Jan. 16, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church hall, 153 Concord Road.

Twenty-four-year-old Jalen Williams says he will sing three numbers. Two of them, “Keep Me” and “God Is on My Side,” are originals. The third, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” was written by James Weldon Johnson more than a century ago. The song was synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement and is often referred to as the Black National Anthem.

Williams was trained in classical and jazz music and has been singing since age 12. He is a graduate of North Point Bible College in Haverhill, where he studied music and worship, and has performed in several churches. Mr. Williams will be joined by three fellow Boston-area musicians on piano, bass and drums.

The breakfast also will feature marks from a variety of speakers on Dr. King’s principles and values, and how they continue to apply to society today. Among the confirmed speakers are Kyle Draper, Bedford resident and sports broadcasting personality; Reginald Nichols, assistant human resources director at Middlesex Community College; Chief of Police Robert Bongiorno; and resident Rachel Murphy, who experienced the Civil Rights Movement first-hand.

Leaders and students from Middlesex Community College and Bedford’s state senator and representative also plan to be present.

The board of Bedford Embraces Diversity, the community-based organization committed to increasing awareness and understanding of diversity, felt that this new event would serve as an opportunity to reinforce Dr. King’s messages of justice and equality at the community level.

There will be a nominal admission charge of $5 for the breakfast, catered by Prince Street Cafe. For reservations, write to [email protected] or call Marilou Barsam (781-271-9798) or Tricia Anderson (781-538-4690).
