Sunday, March 5th was a big day for some boys in Bedford Cub Scouts.
Thomas Barney, Cameron Comeau, Renby Fernald, Alexander Mattson, Daniel Randhahn, Harrison Sachs, Jonathan Sandler, and Ben Sedran, all students at Lane School, received the Cub Scouts’ highest award, the Arrow of Light.
Many of these boys have been in Cub Scouts since first grade. To earn the Arrow of Light, a Cub Scout must complete four required adventures and three elective adventures. This is in addition to being part of, and participating with, the whole group, known as the Pack – made up of boys from 1st to 5th grades.
Much focus is given to citizenship, outdoor skills ,and team building. These boys exemplified the scout motto of “Do Your Best.” Most of them, as well as 5th grader Thomas Zildjian, have now “crossed over” and joined the Boy Scouts (boys 5th through 12th grades) with one of the two Troops located here in Bedford.
Boy Scouting was founded in the early 1900’s in England by British Army officer, Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell. The program started in the United States in 1910, followed by Cub Scouting in 1930.
One of Baden- Powell’s directions to scouts was, “Try and leave this world a little better than you found it.” We strive to keep to that mission in Bedford scouting.
