A brand-new traverse climbing wall was unveiled at 8 am on Friday, March 24 in the gym at the John Glenn Middle School, to the delight of all involved.

The brainchild of Physical Education & Life Skills Teacher Jackie Supprise, funds for the wall were raised by the Middle School Parents Association, and it was installed by the Facilities Department.

Among the first young climbers, the reaction was in part about their hands, and how hard it is to move sideways along the 40-foot span.

To complete its coverage of the new wall, The Citizen defers to Assistant Principal Matthew Mehler’s post, “Build it, and we will climb,” on the school administration blog. In words and images, Mr. Mehler brings the project full circle, from the wall’s arrival in a truck full of cartons, through construction, and to this morning’s euphoric launch.

Way cool! I think that climb-story barning is a great whole-body experience — it’s exercise, it’s analyzing the info on momentum and force that your muscles are giving you, making judgments about them, having the courage to thrust a limb through space to the next hold, gaining confidence in your physical self and your judgment. I’m 71, grew up where there was a 3-story barn full of hay bales where I climbed and jumped. I wasn’t good at sports, but I learned about physical confidence from those hay bales, and from tramping through woods, climbing boulders, and jumping over streams. Enjoy, JGMS !
