Bedford’s Third Annual Multicultural Festival to Take Place on Sunday Afternoon, May 21

Submitted by Bedford Embraces Diversity

Bedford Embraces Diversity has announced that the third annual Bedford Multicultural Festival will take place on Sunday afternoon, May 21.

Unlike the first two festivals, which were hosted by the high school, plans call for this one to take place entirely outside, on the field space and parking areas near and around Town Center.

Highlights of the day will include the opening parade, a rich array of performing artists, interactive activities for children and adults, and ethnic foods, including several vendors new to the festival. The first two festivals drew hundreds of visitors of all ages, and organizers hope the outdoor plan will attract even more.

The organizers say they hope to involve more “cultural communities and organizations, as well as individuals in the parade this year to fully represent the diverse makeup of Bedford.” Details are available from Marilou Barsam ([email protected]) or Valerie Rushanan ([email protected]).

Bedford Embraces Diversity is a grass-roots organization that emerged three years ago as a community response to episodes of anti-Semitism.

The multicultural festival is a fulfillment of the group’s mission statement, which includes “educating the community on differences — visible and invisible,” as well as “celebrating the cultural complexity of Bedford” and “empowering our young people to embrace their own differences and value those of others.”

The festival is underwritten by grants and donations from businesses, churches, and governmental and non-profit organizations. Municipal departments and the public schools also provide invaluable support.
