Hidden Treasures in Bedford

Submitted by Bedford Town Historian Sharon Lawrence McDonald

May is “Hidden Treasures Month” in Massachusetts. The organization Freedom’s Way, in partnership with the National Park Service, is sponsoring a celebration of the wonderful historic places located all across Eastern Massachusetts.

Bedford is joining in to proudly show off three of its own historical treasures: the Bedford Flag, the historic meetinghouse on Bedford Common, and the Job Lane Farm Museum.

The Bedford Flag

On Saturday, May 13, from 1– 4 p.m., Sharon McDonald will be at the Bedford Free Public Library to tell you the story of the Bedford Flag, the oldest flag in the United States. While you can visit the flag for a self-guided tour whenever the Library is open, this afternoon it’s an extra-special treat to have a guide to open the vault and answer all of your questions. (She might even sing you her Bedford Flag song!)

Bedford’s Historic Meetinghouse, First Parish on Bedford Common

Have you been wishing you could take a peek inside the 200-year-old First Parish Church on the Common? On Sunday afternoon, May 14 docents will be offering twenty-minute historical tours. Bring a friend and drop by between 1 and 4 p.m. They’ll meet you in the Elm St entry, just outside the church office.

Job Lane Farm Museum

Also on Sunday May 14 between 2 and 4 p.m., the Job Lane Farm Museum will be open for tours. This historic house was built circa 1713 and is furnished with period antiques. Guides garbed in colonial dress will tell you about the families who lived there and their place in the history of Bedford. In the barn, children can enjoy decorating a flower pot for Mom on Mother’s Day.
