As part of their study of state and local government, students met with State Representative Ken Gordon (D-Bedford) in mid-April for a question and answer session, as well as a behind-the-scenes tour of the State House.

On the tour, students were able to see many of the historic features of the State House as well as the governor’s office, the Senate Chamber, and sit in on part of an informal session of the House of Representatives.

“It was a pleasure to give the BHS Government Class a tour of the State House and to discuss Massachusetts Government with them,” said Rep. Gordon. “I was very pleased that they had the opportunity to sit in on Informal Session to see the Legislature at work. These students were wise beyond their years and asked extremely thoughtful questions, I cannot wait to see what they go on to achieve.”

BHS Junior, Liberty Henson was most inspired by “The State House, it’s rich history and how officials work together to conduct the daily duties for Massachusetts’s commonwealth.” Senior, Clara Pintagro, a BHS student commented “The Government is one of those things you hear a lot about but never get to see in action. It was really exciting to finally get a look at where it all takes place in the state of Massachusetts.”

BHS Teacher, John Wyscokowski said, “Students have spent the year studying the different branches and levels of government, how they function, and the role citizens have in government and the impact government has in the lives of citizens.”

The purpose of the trip was to give students the opportunity to see state government up close and gain greater insight into how a state government works and the ways in which elected representatives, with the varied interests of their constituents, work together to make decisions for the good of the commonwealth.
