The 2017 Destination Imagination World Finals in Knoxville, TN begin tomorrow, Wednesday, May 24, and the Skittleworms, a 5th-grade team from Lane School, will be there to represent Massachusetts in their age category. The team qualified for the Global Finals by winning at their regional competition, and this year’s statewide contest.

The team’s GoFundMe page exceeded its goal, helping to make the trip affordable for the students. “We have dreamed of getting to go to Global Finals since third grade,” according to the team’s page. “[A]nd we all thought that that was an unrealistic dream.”  The Skittleworm’s 2017 season, however, proved that their dream was entirely realistic.

Members of the Skittleworms —  Rachael Hsu, Jane Stewart, Toby Favalora, Ada Cooprider, Evan Kelly and Hayden McAllister  — worked on this year’s DI Challenge Solution for seven months. The team has been together since 2015 when they placed third in the States,  coming very close to going to Globals.

“Our challenge this year [2017] was to create a performance about how a color disappearing changes the world,” the Skittleworms wrote on their GoFundMe page. “We had to include research about the color that disappeared, a colorful character who was affected by and/or caused the color’s disappearance. We also had to include a vanishing act, in which something disappeared using technical theater methods. We studied and researched color science, animation, projection, and made a homemade pipe instrument and composed an original song.  We built all our sets ourselves and made all our costumes ourselves. This was our performance at the regional competition.”
