Bedford Boy Scout Troop 194 attended the 46th annual American Legion Camporee on June 16 to 18, 2017.

While the weekend includes the standard Boy Scout experience of camping in tents and cooking over fire, the main focus is a competition which tests Boy Scout skills and their ability to work as a team.

Twenty Troops sponsored by American Legion Posts in the region attended, with over 200 Scouts participating.

The highest honor is the Commanders Trophy which is presented to the Troop who has the overall best combined placement in scoring. Over 20 events are judged as well as overall campsite, scout made gateway, flag, and a dutch oven cooking dessert competition which is using a cast iron container over coals to bake a cake or the like.

Troop 194 has won the award 11 times over the years. While this year the Troop did not win the coveted award this year, they did win and place in many competitions, a clear illustration on the success of Scouting in Bedford.

Among Troop 194’s awards were first place ribbons in Scout Knowledge and Flag Etiquette which made sponsor  American Legion Post 221 proud, as these two topics are foundations of both groups.

Several Troop 194 Scouts ranked high at the ranges. Senior Scout Devon Porter came in 2nd place in the overall camporee shoot at the rifle range, quite a feat. Each skill station is supported by a participating troop: Troop 194 staffed a team building “mousetrap fishing” and the very important First Aid skills station.

Troop 194 Senior Scouts Cameron Maurice and Tyler Fournier were applauded for their efforts in staffing the First Aid station as simulation actors — victims of injuries, under guidance from station lead Scoutmaster Peter Ricci. The Scouts will use their camporee experience to plan their next local program year focusing on reviewing and working on mastering the skills for the 2018 Camporee
