Letter to the Editor, August 18, 2017 – Boston Sports Club in Lexington Not Closing

August 18, 2017

By Marybeth Kelly
General Manager, Boston Sports Clubs Lexington

In response to rumors and misrepresentations in print, I am grateful for the opportunity to state for the record that the Boston Sports Clubs Lexington is NOT closing.  Our current lease is not up for renewal until 2020.  As we have done so many times in the past, we have every expectation of renewing the lease in the future.

Ours is a vibrant, active community.  For over four decades, we have been serving the fitness needs of our neighbors.  Five thousand members now call us “home,” including 1,200 Bedford residents, ranging in age from eight months to eighty years.  Four generations have learned to swim, play tennis, and improve their lives through exercise under our roof at 475 Bedford Street.  Our outdoor pool complex is a neighborhood tradition for cool summer family fun.   As important, BSC Lexington employs over 125 hard-working professionals.

These rumors about our closing put members and staff at risk.  Like any health club, we rely upon new members to replace those who naturally leave over time.  Although we pride ourselves on having members who joined thirty-plus years ago, we rely upon new memberships each month to keep our costs competitive and our doors open.   “Alternative facts” about our closing place in jeopardy members and staff alike.

I am grateful for this opportunity to squelch these rumors and invite all our neighbors to come by and see for yourselves that we are very much alive and kicking (and swimming and cycling and swinging a racket and jogging and dancing and boxing and meditating and sweating and playing, etc. etc.).  Come join us, and thank you.
