Bedford Boy Scout Troop 194 attended T.L. Storer Scout Reservation in Barnstead, NH in July.  Fifteen Scouts and four uniformed leaders represented the Troop.

Scouts participated in programs focusing on basic scout skills, individual interest badges, and rank advancement. The troop participated in many other activities or “adventures,” as some are called.

Project COPE (challenging outdoor personal experience) was popular as scouts played blindfolded dodge ball and noodle jousting as well as the milk crate challenge – stacking milk crates as high as you can. Our Troop made 14 high, with First Class Scout Quinn Ricci on top, the second place position of the week. We also participated in tomahawk and knife throwing at the ranges. At the waterfront, we had a Troop water polo game and used the water trampoline.

The Troop assisted the camp with a trail improvement at the old nature area. Scout George Rackey completed the mile swim challenge, with many of the Troop’s scouts cheering him on from the beach. New Scouts Henry Noe and Luke Noble, along with several of our Scouts and ALL the Leaders participated in the 6:30 AM “Polar Bear Plunge.” Even though it was summer, the event lived up to its name.

New scout Renby Fernald offered to participate in a skit at the week’s closing campfire, in front of over 300 campers. Experienced Scout Kyle McGinn led a group of the scouts in a skit, and convinced two of our new adult leaders to participate as well.

During the camp experience, scouts sleep in large tents with wood floors. They eat in a mess hall at tables and scouts take turns serving as waiters.  In addition to instructional periods, the scouts have free time to engage with each other or pursue interests.

This year the Troop joined with other Troops from Dedham and West Roxbury, which were led by friends of Scoutmaster Peter Ricci, to cook a meal in the campsite. Troop 194 provided desserts made over an open fire in cast iron Dutch ovens.

Adult Leaders known as Scouters donate their time as volunteers, and the Troop was fortunate to have Mr. Ricci, Mr. Chip Corbin, Mr. James Noble and Mr. Edward Noe for the entire week to support this event for scouts.
