A dozen Bedford High School field hockey players took to Sabourin Field for the season’s home opener against Newton South this week.
It only took senior Kylie Ward just 4 minutes to net the first goal of the game, on an assist from Julia Palazzo. Bucs goalie Sylvia Wolk, a sophomore, could have pulled up a lawn chair for the first half as an aggressive midfield and a stalwart defense kept the ball from getting close to the goal until the last 3 minutes in the first half.
Junior Ashley Guarino scored the second and final goal, just 5 minutes into the second half. Once again, the assist was from Julia Palazzo, a junior.

Newton South finally mounted an offensive attack with 10 minutes left in the game. As a matter of pride, the Bucs wanted to close out the game with a shutout, so the defense stonewalled all of Newton’s attempts.
On Monday, September 11th, there will be a unique “doubleheader” of Bedford Buccaneer home games. First, the BHS Field Hockey team plays Tewksbury Memorial, on Sabourin Field at 3:30 pm, then at 5:15 pm, BHS Volleyball takes on Newton South High in the Bedford High School Gym A/B.
