The Bedford Free Public Library will host a screening of Ava DuVernay’s 2014 film, SELMA, as part of the One Book, One Bedford program on John Lewis’s graphic-novel trilogy, MARCH. The Thursday, October 26 screening will begin at 6:30 pm in the meeting room at the Beford Free Public Library

SELMA, starring David Oyelowo as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., chronicles three months in 1965 culminating in the march over the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, Alabama, to secure voting rights for African Americans. The march was a key factor in securing President Lyndon Johnson’s support for the Voting Rights Act, which he signed into law on August 6, 1965. The movie focuses on Dr. King’s efforts to unite different groups within the broader Civil Rights Movement. Stephan James plays John Lewis. More about the film can be found at IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1020072/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

The Selma to Montgomery March is a key element in the MARCH trilogy, particularly in Book Three. The trilogy, co-written by Andrew Aydin and illustrated by Nate Powell, covers Lewis’s youth in rural Alabama, his young adulthood as a student activist and Freedom Rider, and his leadership in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Major events from the Civil Rights Era, including the 1963 March on Washington, the Freedom Ride movement, and the 1965 Selma to Montgomery March for voting rights, are covered in detail.

The One Book, One Bedford program is open to all, with events planned for all ages and a variety of ways to participate. Books are available to borrow at the Bedford Library, and can be purchased through traditional and online booksellers.
