Chief David Grunes reports that the Bedford Fire Department extinguished a fire at a residence in town this afternoon.

Around noon, Bedford firefighters were dispatched to 27 Gould Road for a report of an active fire. Upon arrival, firefighters made an aggressive attack and brought the fire under control within 15 minutes. The fire was completely extinguished within an hour.

Two elderly residents who were home when the fire broke out were evacuated with the help of neighbors by the time Bedford Fire arrived. They were treated on-scene for smoke inhalation by Armstrong Ambulance, and one was later transported to an area hospital for further evaluation.

Firefighters from Concord, Lexington, Lincoln and Hanscom Air Force Base responded to a mutual aid call put out by the Bedford Fire Department, providing assistance on scene.

The home sustained damage worth an estimated $100,000, and was deemed uninhabitable. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Bedford Fire Department.
