Each year, the Bedford Jewish Community, in collaboration with the town’s Interfaith Clergy Association, hosts a brief remembrance of Kristallnacht, “the night of broken glass” on the Town Common. The 2017 remembrance begins at 7 pm on Thursday, November 9 and lasts about 30 minutes.
Kristallnacht commemorates the nights of November 9 and 10 in 1938, when paramilitary “Brownshirts” and civilians stormed Jewish-owned establishments in German cities, destroying property and intimidating Jews while German authorities looked on without intervening.
Bedford’s commemorative candlelight gathering is a time for sharing words, songs, and prayers that invite us to reflect on the violence can happen when distrust and hatred of differences go unchallenged.
All are welcome to come, light a candle, and stand together to unite against bigotry and violence in our world.
