The Town of Bedford conducted Veterans Day ceremonies at Veterans Memorial Park on The Great Road at noon on Saturday, November 11. Bedford’s Police Honor Guard escorted committee members and dignitaries along the walkway from the Patriot statue to the Veteran’s monument. The Bedford Minuteman Company’s fifes and drums accompanied the march.
Paul Purchia, Chair of Bedford’s Patriotic Holiday Committee, welcomed the crowd and Chaplain John Cooper of American Legion Post 221 offered the opening prayer. Bedford Boy Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance, and the BHS Marching Band played the National Anthem. Program speakers included Jim Voss, Adjutant, American Legion Post 221; David Spence, Commander, VFW Post 1628; Selectman Bill Moonan; and State Representative Ken Gordon.
A long line of participants added small flags to the Memorial Wreath of Honor and shared the names and military service of the Veterans whom they were honoring. The group sang God Bless America just before Major Gary Maki directed the BHS Jr. ROTC to fire three volleys and TAPS was sounded by trumpeters Julia Simoneau and John Giaquinto from the BHS Marching Band. The ceremony ended with a closing prayer by Mike Pilot of VFW Post 1628.
