School Committee Hears Grade 6-12 Math Program Presentation

By Nick Giglio

At their meeting on November 21, the School Committee heard a presentation on the grade 6-12 Math Program. Patrick Morrissey, chair of the BHS Math Department, spoke about the Department’s goals, problems, and visions. He also touched on enrollment in the freshman geometry high honors class, and independent tutors.

The freshman high honors geometry class has seen falling enrollment,  with some students eligible for the high honors class instead choosing the honors class. The final class average for the current senior geometry high honors class was 79.7%. After speaking with department chairs in comparable proficient schools, Morrissey learned that their final averages were very similar.  Current projected enrollment for high honors geometry is between 70 and 80 students.

Although BHS offers an academic achievement center to help students with schoolwork, math students in all grades often choose to work with an outside tutor.  Committee members questioned whether the reliance on outside or paid tutors was due to status or the result of better tutoring. The School Committee asked to learn more about parents’ willingness to pay for outside tutoring.

The School Committee meets next on Tuesday, December 5 in the BHS Large Group Instruction Room at 7:30 PM.
