DPW Engineer Adrienne St John presented a report to Monday’s Selectmen’s meeting proposing a study of traffic flow and the addition of traffic calming measures along Hartford Street, Crescent Avenue, and Bacon Road. Green International Affiliates, Inc. (GAI) recently provided “an evaluation of this corridor with respect to cut-thru traffic and ways to improve safety to all users,” said St. John.

At November’s public meeting, neighbors spoke against making Bacon Road a one-way street to alleviate the traffic. Approximately 350 cars leave South Road and cut through Hartford Street, Crescent Avenue, and Bacon Road to avoid the traffic light at the intersection of The Great Road and South Road. Most of these cars then cross The Great Road into to Hillside Avenue on their way North.

The GIA study will consider alternate ways of handling the traffic, perhaps through not allowing left turns into Hartford Street from Loomis, or creating a right turn only intersection at Bacon Road and The Great Road.

Sidewalks and raised crosswalks will also be studied as part of the contract. The project would be eligible for Chapter 90 funding. The Selectmen approved both GIA’s study and the use of Chapter 90 monies for part of the funding.
