Kevin Murphy Earns Rank of Eagle Scout

Submitted by Bedford Boy Scout Troop 114

Kevin Murphy, a Junior in Bedford High School, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout.  Kevin is a Boy Scout with Troop 114 in Bedford which is chartered to Frank W. Thompson Lodge of Freemasons of Bedford.

The rank of Eagle Scout has always carried with it a special significance, only about five percent of all Boy Scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout.  Becoming an Eagle Scout takes perseverance, hard work and demonstrated leadership skills.

The final step in the process of becoming an Eagle Scout is the Eagle project.  Kevin’s Eagle project was designing and building wooden mobile weight shelves for the Council on Aging in Bedford.  These shelves allow over 800 pounds of exercise weights to be stored in a closet and moved in and out for exercise classes.

While the ultimate objective of Eagle project is for the Eagle Scout to demonstrate leadership, there are many organizations and people in the Bedford community who were supportive of Kevin’s project.  First Mr. Bob Doud, whose son also became an Eagle Scout from Troop 114 years ago, was instrumental in providing woodworking guidance and access to his workshop.  Two companies donated all the material and supplies; Mike Bailey of Friends Lumber in Burlington was instrumental in donating the wood and Mr. Mark Patnode of ACE Hardware in Bedford was very helpful in design suggestions as well as donating the hardware.   Finally, the project would not be possible without the beneficiary Alison Cservenschi of the Council on Aging who was patient, understanding and very supporting throughout the entire process.

In addition to being involved in scouting, Kevin is an avid skier, having skied for years on the Alpine race team and Freestyle Academy at Gunstock Mountain in New Hampshire as well as on Bedford High School’s Varsity Alpine Race team.  Kevin is also a lifeguard, enjoys playing piano and making music with his friends as well as biking around Bedford.
