Letter to the Editor: May 8, 2018 – A Bedford Swap and Donate Day Thank You

May 8, 2018
Submitted by Frances Bigda-Peyton

Thanks to all the people who made this year’s Swap and Donate Day a resounding success. Volunteers, organizers, and donors alike came through. The DPW was also a strong supporter.

A sampling of statistics— seventy plus bikes were donated and three large vehicle loads of linens went to Mission of Goods for their ongoing work with formerly homeless families. Extra toys and holiday decorations went to Goodwill and Christmas in the City.

Many were surprised that they could just take items without cost. “What’s the catch?” was frequently asked.  The event was meant to encourage town wide re-use.  With 30% of carbon emissions coming from “stuff,” that is reason alone to share items that are no longer needed.

There was a sense of community in the air as well.  Families who were less fortunate found needed toys and household items. One little boy (and his father) was delighted to acquire his first baseball glove. His father thanked us profusely.  One donor who was downsizing was delighted that her items found a new home almost immediately—she was actually able to meet some of the people who took them; they thanked her wholeheartedly.
