Paul King won the gold in his age group

On June 26th and June 27th the COA hosted the all-day ‘Billiards Tournament’ organized by the Massachusetts Senior Games.  For a number of years Bedford has been chosen by the organizer, Dick Carey, who labeled the COA as ‘one of the best’ pool rooms in the state!  Over the two day event 40 seniors, on each day, completed for the gold, silver and bronze medals.

On day 1 the players competed in their age group ranging from 50+ to 90+.  Bedford local, Richard Fryer, won the gold medal in his age range 85-89.  Richard also won silver on day 2 of the competition in the ‘Ultimate’ Tournament where all ages play together.  90 year old Bedford native Paul King won the bronze medal, upsetting two of the Bay State’s best pool players nearly twenty years his junior.  The COA is proud to report that Mr. Fryer has won the most medals in the history of the games over the years.

The COA was grateful to have the event catered by kind donations from Flatbreads Pizza in Bedford and The Chateau in Waltham.  Dick Carey thanked the COA with a great letter and presented a gold medal to the staff, which can be viewed at the COA.

The Massachusetts Seniors Games was founded in 1991 by Dr. Jack Neumann of Springfield College.  The games give seniors the opportunity to complete with the Olympic spirit throughout the year across the commonwealth.  Seniors are able to complete in a wide range of sporting events.  The Bedford Council on Aging is proud to be a part of this great opportunity for seniors to engage in competition and give meaning to their senior years.
