Some of Bedford’s community organizations taking part in Bedford Day shared the activities that their booths will offer:

  • Bedford Arbor Resources Committee: BARC will have information about the inventory of Bedford’s street trees that you and your neighbors conducted over the summer – you can turn in your results to booth #38 on Saturday;  initiate Bedford’s piece of a state-wide project to have homeowners check their own yards for harmful invasive species; ask whether you would like to participate in a maple sugaring project; ask  you to tell us if you know of a stand of oaks heavily infested with winter moths, so we can participate in a research project to combat the moths; suggest you check out the new tree labels at the Jenks Nature Trail in front of the Library and HS.
  • Bedford 4H: Bedford 4H will have a petting zoo (featuring the animals that club members raise, right here in Bedford) and a felting project (as part of the educational effort for their Cultural Council grant) at the fair.
  • Bedford Arts and Crafts Society: Bedford Arts & Crafts Society will host the 15th Annual Regional Art Exhibition on Friday , September 19th from 8AM to 4PM and again on Bedford Day, September 20 from 10:30 AM to 3 PM in the Town Center , second floor. There are 6 categories being judged: watercolor, oil/acrylic/pastel, drawing, print, photography and sculpture/3 dimensional. Prizes will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place in each category.  We will also have a table outside in the parking lot with donated art work and homemade items. There will be a raffle consisting of a handmade stole, a painting, and a crib for an 18″ doll.
  • Bedford Center for the Arts: Be sure to stop by the Bedford Center for the Arts booth on Bedford Day! We will have a pinwheel project for the kids as well as beautiful collages highlighting some of our members’ artwork. At the booth you can find out about membership, upcoming events, check out our ever popular socks by Solmate Socks and more! You can find us in Booths 71 & 72. The weather looks great and we can’t wait to see you there.
  • Bedford Citizen: The Bedford Citizen’s “sitting room” will again offer a shady respite, simple nibblies, and an opportunity to share local stories with our reporters, editors and board members.
  • Bedford Education Foundation: The Bedford Education Foundation will have a cookie decorating booth, and they’ll also be raffling off 2 tickets to the BEF Winter Bash, their annual auction & cocktail party (Dec. 6, 2014 at Waxy O’Connor’s).
  • Bedford Embraces Diversity: The Bedford Embraces Diversity booth hosts a “Diversity Quilt” drawing and more. Visit Bedford Embraces Diversity’s booth #47 on Bedford Day! Bedford residents, both children and adults alike are encouraged to create a drawing with their signature on it. The drawings are meant to represent what you think is unique, special or different about your family. The completed drawings will be assembled into one large quilt that will be hung in the town library. Also, digital photographs will be taken of Bedford families to create a Diversity Photo Montage that be will posted (with approval) on our website and Facebook page. Delicious cookies, bars and brownies will be sold toward building a donation fund for the group.
  • Bedford Family Connection:  The Bedford Family Connection booth will feature fun for the youngest Bedford citizens.  Kids can try their luck at the bean bag toss to win a prize.  They can enjoy some sensory fun at our rice and bean table.  Finally, they can play with play dough or make a ghost to decorate our Halloween Party banners, which will be on display at our Halloween party, Sat. Oct. 25th at 10am at St. Michael’s Church.  Parents can visit the booth to meet members and find out more about membership in this community organization for families with kids ages 0-5.
  • Bedford Garden Club: A compost machine will be raffled off by the Bedford Garden Club at this year’s Bedford Day booth. The Public Works Department (DPW) has donated an Earth Compost Machine that the DPW sells for $40 dollars.  Raffle tickets are $1; $2 for three tickets and $5 for eight tickets. The club also will sell fall mums in numerous colors as well as small flower arrangements and narcissus and tulip bulbs in bags of 10.  A small number of sterling silver pierced earrings with small garden trowels will also be available for sale. Garden literature and club activities such as civic beautification, sponsoring educational programs related to gardening and providing scholarships to deserving High School seniors are highlighted and we welcome any new members to join us for the coming year. Membership applications will be available.  Please stop by our booth. The Garden Club’s Bedford Day activities are being coordinated by Christine McGovern and Zoe Pierce.
  • Bedford Hanscom Girl Scouts: The scouts are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting in Bedford!  There will be a “happy birthday” themed float in the parade, designed and built by the girls of Troop 71608!  Please come visit us at Booth #61,  Bedford Day is the town’s largest recruitment event for Girls Scouts! We are seeking girls in grades K – 12 who are interested in making friends, having fun, trying new things, and helping their community!  Adult volunteers are also needed! Please stop by the booth to learn more about Girls Scouting in Bedford/Hanscom buy a commemorative 100th Anniversary Patch!
  • Bedford Historical Society: Along with the usual array of Bedford-related merchandise, and our large Bedford Flag float, the Society will be offering two displays of historical interest at our booth this year (weather permitting).  An array of finds from an archaeological dig at the Job Lane House will be exhibited. These items were found by local students during a summer program offered by the Recreation Department. We will also feature a display of historic artifacts  related to Bedford’s former thriving dairy industry. They will include items from the J.B. Prescott Dairy – later Bedford Farms Dairy – as well as some interesting equipment unique to that industry. On Bedford Day, be on the lookout for the cow to learn more!
  • Bedford Minuteman Company: This year is the 50th year of the Bedford Minuteman Company.  Our booth will have the usual T-shirts, Bedford Flag items and Bedford Flag Pillows as well as (new this year!) tricorn hats for kids.
  • Bedford’s Political Town Committee – Democrats:  The Bedford Democratic Town Committee will be marching in the parade along with State Rep. Ken Gordon and State Senator Mike Barrett. Seth Moulton, Democratic candidate for the 6th Congressional District, will be come by our table from about 12:30 to 1:30 pm to meet voters. As a fundraiser for our committee, we will be raffling off two books: Forgetting to Be Afraid, by Wendy Davis and Hard Choices, by Hillary Clinton. Come by, have slice of cake, and learn more about our local party and our candidates.
  • Bedford’s Political Town Committee – Republicans: The mission of the Bedford Republican Town Committee is to recruit and elect Republican town, legislative, statewide and congressional candidates who represent the people of Bedford. With the 2014 Mid-Term Elections just a few short weeks away, we will be introducing the citizens of Bedford to the Republican field of candidates.  Richard Tisei, candidate for US Congress in the 6th District, Sandi Martinez, candidate for State Senate and Paul Girouard, candidate for State Representative will be among those joining us at this year’s fair.  Stop by to “meet and greet the candidates” – learn where they stand on the important issues facing the people of Bedford and our nation.  We’ll have plenty of literature, bumper stickers and lawn signs so you can show your support!
  • Bedford TV: Bedford TV has an exciting day planned for Bedford Day. We have a schedule of events where people can meet out very own local Bedford TV stars like – Sandy Morvillo of Let’s Get Fit, Gretchen Kind of the Fancy Kind, Mary Kay Elloian of the Legal Edition, and of course Ken and Zack of The Wrestling Kennection. They will be discussing how they got started and the benefits of hosting their own shows. We’re going to showcase our new trivia show and we’ll be featuring musical guests who are frequent visitors to Bedford TV – Penpa Tsering and Allen Zhou. Don’t forget to stop by to pick up our special giveaway.
  • BEST: Bedford Elementary Schools Together will be selling cups of slush, bottles of water, and Spirit Wear.
  • CSF: To celebrate its 50th Anniversary, CSF invites all past recipients, current and former Board members, children – the Future Scholars, and supporters of CSF of Bedford to walk in the Bedford Parade behind the lead car with Bedford’s 2014 Citizen of the Year, Alma Pomponi, co-chair of the Dollars for Scholars Phone-a-thon. (Assemble off Loomis St, on Deangelo Dr at 9:30 -10AM) Children and families, supporters of CSF, past scholarship recipients and board members are all warmly invited to stop at the CSF of Bedford booth and participate in various activities: Fill in a thank you card to send a favorite teacher; find your name among the past recipients; browse the many thank you notes from students; reach into the famous “Blue Whale” and grab a handful of candy; have a refreshing cup of coffee; watch one of several videos about CSF; pick up CSF literature, “Save the Dates” events list; congratulate Bedford’s 2014 Citizen of the Year; re-connect with past friends, and much more
  • First Baptist Church:  This year we’ll being handing out pencils and squishy earth balls.  We hope you’ll stop by our booth to take a look at all our literature, especially an invitation to the Open House the very next day, Sunday, September 21, 12:00-2:00 pm, 153 Concord Rd.  You’ll get to see the building now known as “Connections” to be used for different community events such as exercise classes, art classes, yoga, a coffee house, Sunday church activities, and other possibilities.  Refreshments will be offered.  Call 781-275-8151 to inquire about times/space.  Books authored by our pastor, Rev. Dr. Scott Arnold, will be on display and for sale.  Also available will be brochures describing our ministries, free CDs of the New Testament, and an ongoing video showing this August’s Vacation Bible School.
  • First Church of Christ, Congregational: For Bedford Day 2014 celebration, First Church, Congregational is once again hosting a Pancake Breakfast, FREE to military families and veterans. The event will start at 7:30 am and conclude at 10:30 am, just before the Bedford Day Parade begins. The general public is also welcome to enjoy breakfast, with proceeds going towards the Wounded Warrior Project.  First Church’s booth at Bedford day will include crafts and other items made my church members.  We will also be handing out “Love Your Neighbor – Bedford Embraces Diversity” items.  After a successful first year, we will again make the sidewalk leading to our church an area where artists of all ages can create sidewalk chalk masterpieces.
  • First Parish on the Common, Unitarian Universalist: First Parish will share information about various programs including religious education, Sunday services, support for social action initiatives as well as activities for individuals and families. There will also be samples of the apple crisp that will be featured on the Common during the congregation’s second annual AppleFest on Saturday, September 27.
  • Frank W. Thompson Lodge: Frank W. Thompson Masonic Lodge is the proud sponsor of the Danny Oates Memorial 5K run before the parade and will again be marching in the parade.  Freemasonry is the world’s oldest and largest fraternity.  To learn more visit them in booths 16 and 17 were you can also enjoy delicious popcorn and cotton candy served by volunteers from the International Order of Rainbow Girls.
  • Friends of Depot Park: Find the Friends staffing the Welcome Center in the Freight House at Depot Park on Bedford Day.
  • Friends of Fawn Lake: Friends of Fawn Lake’s mission is to establish the importance of Fawn Lake as an essential town resource.  Our kick off event, FAWNSTOCK, will be held at the Lake on September 28th.  Be sure to come by our booth to learn all about the event and take a moment to go back in time as you step into a vintage VW Bus; grab a “What the Muck” bracelet and take a chance on winning tickets to a Patriots home game!  All proceeds will be used to fund future Fawn Lake events and awareness campaigns!
  • Friends of the Library:  The Friends of The Bedford Free Public Library will have large booth hosting an outdoor sidewalk book sale showcasing fiction and non-fiction books that are also being sold at the Fall Book Sale in the main library.  A special focus this year is the extensive Children’s book inventory, including vintage Children’s Books.  The Friends of the Library is hosting a free book contest for all visitors to the booth.  Visitors can learn about membership in the Friends of the Bedford Library and have an opportunity to join while visiting the booth. Come visit the FOL booth and see how the Friends support the library and our community.
  • Friends of the Minuteman Bikeway: As always, the Friends will supervise a Bike Corral that provides safe bicycle storage for individuals and families who cycle to Bedford Day. Joining with the Bedford DPW and the Toole Design Group, the Friends will also promote Walk-Bike to School Day, coming up on October 8; offer information about Bedford’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan; and seek input from residents about the proposed connection between the end of the Minuteman Bikeway at Depot Park and the start of the Reformatory Branch Trail. The Friends’ newly elected president Diane Zamot will be selling brand new custom Friends t-shirts at the booth.
  • Rotary Club of Bedford: The Rotary Club will be selling hot dogs and hamburgers, with the proceeds going to the Rotary Foundation that has requests from such varied projects as a Guatamalan water harvesting project, in collaboration with WPI; support for Bedford’s Pan Mass Challenge Kids’ Ride; and replenishing the club’s stock bicycle helmets because hundreds were given away during this year’s Bicycle Safety Day.
  • St Paul’s Episcopal Church: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will be offering baked goods and spinner art for sale at Bedford Day. Food items with nuts and other allergens will be clearly marked, and smocks will be provided for spinner art. The church will also have save-the-date postcards with information on three upcoming events open to the public: a Paint Night fundraiser on October 22; our annual Advent Fair on December 6; and our biannual song-and-dance revue, ST. PAUL’S TONIGHT: ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK, on May 2 and 3.
