Thank you, Barbara, for the explanation. I do hope it returns to Mondays. I will let you know if volunteering at the market is something I can commit to – it would depend on what’s involved and the time commitment (I have 2 children under 3 and a spouse who travels a lot). In the meantime, the Carlisle market is a great recommendation – thank you, Marjorie! We used to go there before we started frequenting the Bedford market. I’ll definitely start checking it out again. I’ve also been going to the Arlington market this year, which is a really great one.

Thanks you for your input. We will be deciding over the fall/winter whether we will have a weekend market next year.

If you miss the weekly Bedford Farmers Market, try the Carlisle Farmers Market. It runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to Noon at the Kimball’s Ice Cream parking lot on Route 225 in Carlisle. Just 10 minutes from Bedford Center. It always has fresh local fruits and vegetables, eggs and grass-fed meats, coffee, baked goods and crafts. Often there is live music and sometimes even made-to-order breakfast burritos. The website is http://www.carlislefarmersmarket.org

Does anyone know why there is only one market day this year? I am really disappointed by the absence of the weekly market this year.

The Bedford Farmers’ Market is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. The goals have been to provide good value for the Bedford community and profitability for local farmers and specialty food entrepreneurs.

During the past four years, the market struggled getting sufficient customers to make the market profitable for the vendors as well as getting enough volunteers to maintain the market. At the end of the 2011 market, the BFM Board of Directors voted to suspend the Monday market in 2012 and to focus on education.

In March, the BFM Board of Directors decided to try a one time market to determine whether a weekend market was viable for Bedford. The response was enthusiastic by the Bedford community as well as the vendors. The Board is deciding whether to have regular markets again but to do that we would need a strong showing of volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering and helping the Bedford Farmers’ Market, please contact Barbara Purchia, [email protected].
