“Yessssss!” cheered Cassidy Schuman, a second grader at Davis School, as a huge stack of pizzas arrived at her classroom door, kicking off Mrs. Jean Jones’ celebratory pizza-recess Box Tops party.  Her class, having collected 2,392 Box Tops since September, was awarded the title of “Davis School Box Tops All Stars.”  Mrs. Jones’ class worked together to raisenearly $240 worth of Box Tops, the most money raised for their school out of all the other Davis classrooms.  Each student was given an individual mini-trophy to take home as a memento of their year of success.

Together Davis, Lane, and John Glenn Middle School tripled their earnings from last year through their revamped Box Tops for Education program, earning approximately $6,000 for Bedford Schools.  Third grader Brandon Gordon shared his secret of success in leading his class to become the All Star Earners at Lane School.  “My mom asked our neighbors, friends, my grandmas and the people at her school. I helped cut them and put them in piles of 10. I was proud when the kids saw how many Box Tops I brought to school.”  Together with Brandon’s classmates, Mrs. LoriAnn O’Brien’s class brought in 2,426 Box Tops at Lanewhich amounts to nearly $250.

Elementary students weren’t the only ones hard at work clipping, collecting, and cashing in Box Tops this year.  Ms. Lauren Noferi’s6th grade advisory enjoyed their own celebration as JGMS All Stars, along with Ms. Heidi Scaltretto’s 7th grade and Ms. Barbara Ferri’s 8th grade advisories.  JGMS’s earnings nearly doubled from the previous year. This year’s earningshelped fund SMARTBoards at Davis, a laptop cart at Lane, and Washington DC scholarships and the Homework Club at JGMS.

Bedford community members and businesses can help our schools by looking for Box Tops coupons on product packaging, clipping them, and mailing them to: Jennifer Goldman, BTFE Coordinator, c/o Lane School, 66 Sweetwater Avenue, Bedford, MA  01730.

Residents can also earn eBoxTops for the schools by shopping online at their favorite stores simply by starting their shopping experience at www.btfe.com.  Login and select Shop Marketplace on the Earn tab.

Thank you to all community members who participated in the program by dropping off their Box Tops at our drop off bins around town.  There are drop off containers located at the Council on Aging, Bedford Town Hall, and The Bedford Family Connection at First Parish Church.  Bedford High School students can turn in Box Tops to the High School Office for a chance to win prizes.  All other students can continue to save their Box Tops throughout the summer to turn in to their new classrooms in September!

Bedford MA Democratic Town Committee to Host Candidates for Vacant State Representative Seat
Submitted by Brian Hart and Alma Hart, Co-chairs, Bedford Democratic Town Committee

Candidates running for Charley Murphy’s now-vacant seat in the Massachusetts Legislature will gather at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 28 July 2012 at 9:30 in the Flint Room at Bedford Town Center, 12 Mudge Way.

Where: Flint Room, Bedford Town Center, 12 Mudge Way, Bedford, MA 01730 (Link to Directions)

The purpose of the meeting is to give local citizens an opportunity meet Democratic candidates running for the State Representative seat opened up by the resignation of incumbent Charley Murphy.

Since Charley Murphy’s name is the only one on the ballot in the upcoming Democratic Primary September 6th, new candidates will have to get their names written in by voters. This will be effectively a “sticker” campaign where candidates will hand out labels with their names on them to voters entering the polls to vote.

Dave Fionda of Burlington, currently the only announced Democratic candidate, is confirmed to attend Saturday’s meeting. Several other candidates have discussed running, but none have declared.

We will use a forum format depending on whether other candidates emerge. Questions and answers will follow. The meeting is open to the public and we anticipate guests from Wilmington and Burlington Democratic Town Committees.

Dave Fiona has a website at www.writeindave.com  and his email is [email protected].

Questions can be directed to Brian Hart ([email protected]) or Alma Hart ([email protected]), this year’s Co-Chairs of the Bedford MA Democratic Town Committee.
